Why should I service my car?
Cars are similar to our bodies, they too require routine checkups to make sure everything is working properly. Regularly servicing your car can make the difference between it running smoothly and efficiently, and the risk of it breaking down and incurring an expensive and unexpected repair. By neglecting to regularly service your car, normal wear and tear, which would typically require only minor maintenance, can quickly become a costly major repair or replacement.
So how do you know when your car needs to be serviced? Well, if you open your glove box chances are you will find a little book in there called an Owner’s Manual. The Owner’s Manual will tell you exactly what the people who designed, engineered, and built your vehicle recommend as far as making it last for as long as possible. For example, it will tell you how often you need to change your car’s oil.
What does a typical service entail?
What a “typical” service entails will usually depends on how long its been since your car was last serviced and the practices of that particular garage. If you regularly service your car according to the manufacture’s guidelines your car probably only requires a basic service. If however, you rarely if ever service your car and you’ve noticed it no longer runs as well as it use to, you will likely require a service a few steps up from the basic.
An oil and filter change is not only one of the most important services, but it is also customarily included in a basic service. When a car is brought in for service to any garage, that garage has a duty of care towards their customers to complete a visual safety inspection even if the car is only scheduled for a basic oil and filter change. If you’re wondering why the oil change service is so crucial, the reason is simple… Oil is the lubricant that keeps all of the mechanical parts inside of your engine working smoothly so when the oil gets low, there’s added friction that will ultimately contribute to a car’s early demise. When you bring your car in for a basic service you can also reasonably expect a top up of all the essential fluids in your car’s engine and an inspection of around 35 other key components. If you’re at a garage that provides exceptional service, they may even check the brakes, the manufacturer guidelines and recommend any additional work your car may need.
A step up from a basic service is the full service. The full service typically includes all of the services mentioned above, plus an additional 15-30 checks on various other components. One step above the full service is the major service. As you can probably guess, this service will include everything covered in a full service as well as a change of spark plugs and fuel filters and some other services recommended by your car’s manufacturer’s schedule. It is important to realize that regardless of what level of service you select, the prices of each service does not include any additional repair or maintenance work discovered during that service.
Last but certainly not least is the manufacturer’s service. This service is the most expensive and most comprehensive service as it includes all wear, service and maintenance your car requires. There are a wide range of checks that are part of the manufacturer’s service including, but not limited to, the oil and oil filter check and replacement, brake fluid check and top up, anti-freeze coolant check and top up, windscreen wash check and top up, steering check, shock absorbers check, suspension check, light check, wheel alignment check, charging systems check and tire tread and pressure check.
